My two year old could paint that...

ever walk into an art gallery and hear someone say that? And all these years I thought that person was ignorant and base. Well, here's proving, they may have been right. My two year old did paint this, and I love it. Actually I wish I could've painted it, because I love its composition, the freshness, the colour, texture... well, I am also slightly biased, being his mom and all. We have started stretching the watercolour paper. A very useful preparation. Since doing it both my own and Marcel's paintings have very much improved. If you don't know how to stretch paper, I'll post about it soon. Its easy and 2 year olds can help too. I have also made some improvements to my painting space.

Now I paint at an easel in the kitchen. I can keep my paints open all the time, which means I can paint, cook, child mind, and nurse at the same time. Oh the joy! So, I am now a slightly distracted mother as I am constantly looking over my kids shoulder, thinking, "hmmm, maybe that could use a little more burnt sienna..." Not so good for the kid, but Oh so much more stimulating for me...

Why is that considered a slight against a 'grown-up' artist? I've come to see that as a compliment in some ways ... even if the speaker doesn't intend it as such! You've seen that TED talk by Sir Ken Robinson on how schools kill creativity in children ... to retain or get back to those creative impulses we had as children should be a goal of artists in some ways - away from the commercial aspects of art & design to that place where we're not seeking money or fame for our art, rather the joy from the act of creating it is reward enough (but don't tell anybody!)

That's sort of what I went through on my last semester of uni ... I was so theoried out trying to conceptually arrange my art that I got to a point where I wasn't happy with what I was doing and it wasn't working because I wasn't doing something I felt I was truly connected to on a personal level ... or knew enough about. I asked myself why was I doing this? I decided to get back to where I started and discover why I got into this in the first place, from since I was a child. It was a good lesson to learn & it gave me new lease in my art-life.

M's painting(s) look really good. I should have an painting session with him sometime.

I love that comment cam! Nicely put, so many times the so called "training" of our creativity makes us even more restrained. I felt the same way at school too. Only now, 8 years later, Im really enjoying painting again! Marcel has a short attention span when it comes to painting - like 10 mins at a time, but he would LOVE to paint with you!!! you should come over sometime during the day and paint with us!
